The Proffitt Podcast
"Help! I Recorded My Intro But Can't Record Episode One"
The dreaded publish button. That moment when your finger hovers over the keyboard, second-guessing everything you've created. Sound familiar?
Today, I'm walking and talking about the universal fear that plagues nearly every content creator: publishing your first piece. After speaking with countless creators who have their equipment set up perfectly but simply cannot bring themselves to record that first episode, I decided to address this head-on.
What's fascinating is how this fear transcends experience levels. Even certified coaches and professional speakers find themselves suddenly at a loss for words when it's just them and the microphone. As one student wrote: "Every time I go to record my first episode, I completely freeze up. I don't know what to say. Does this mean I'm not meant to be a podcaster?"
The truth? This happens to EVERYONE. That awkward feeling when you're talking to yourself, questioning if you sound stupid, wondering if anyone will listen—it's not unique to you. What separates successful content creators isn't the absence of these feelings but their willingness to push through them.
My advice might sound overly simple, but it works: Record something. Delete it if you hate it. Record again. Keep going until you have a version you can live with. Because content creation isn't about perfection—it's about progress. You're in this for the long game, committed to showing up consistently and improving gradually.
Whether you're launching a podcast, YouTube channel, or newsletter, remember that your first piece won't define you. What matters is starting somewhere and keeping going. Join our Consistent Creators Club or check out Proffitt Podcasting if you need support on this journey. The bravest thing any creator can do isn't creating perfect content—it's simply beginning.

recording content in public is always real funny. But here we go, I'm out on my walk and I'm really excited to talk about publishing your first piece of content. So, whether it's your first podcast episode, it's your first YouTube video, whatever it is, youtube video, whatever it is. Let's talk about hitting publish, because I get emails like this all the time. So this is someone who purchased our course. We have a course all about how to get started, how to start launching, market a podcast in 30 days or less, so you should check it out Profit Podcasting but I get these emails, get these messages. I talk to people at conferences. We have just so many different interactions with people who are terrified to hit publish for one reason or another. Like sometimes it's like, well, it just doesn't feel right, it's not the right time for me or, you know, you could have so many different reasons why it's not right, and so I want to talk through some of those today and get into the nitty gritty of why this might be holding you back too.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Profit Podcast, where we teach you how to start, launch and market your content with confidence. I'm your host, crystal Profit, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today, because if you've been trying to figure out the world of content creation, this is the show that will help be your time-saving shortcut. So let's get right to it, shall we?
Speaker 1:So I actually want to read this specific email from a current student. It says hey, crystal, you know, finished first two modules. I love the course, you're a great teacher, I'm learning so much. Thank you so much, like that's so nice of you to say. But then they go on to say I'm really struggling right now.
Speaker 1:I recorded my intro out of the music and I'm happy with that. But every time I go to record my first episode I completely freeze up. I don't know what to say. I feel like I just keep rambling on and on watching the clock tick away. Does this mean that I'm not meant to be a podcast or meant to do a podcast? I'm a certified coach and speaker and I love sharing about personal development.
Speaker 1:Believing in her confidence, I hit record. It's like I don't remember anything at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried self-talk, I've tried journaling about it. I've tried a cost-benefit analysis of why I want to at least try doing a podcast and still can't get the episode one done.
Speaker 1:So a few things that were mentioned here is one they already recorded the introduction. They recorded with their music, like they got everything set up for the main piece, but then they, they can't record the actual episode. So do you know what this tells me? This tells me that tech and equipment like those aren't the issues that they're struggling with, which is typically what happens with so many podcasters. They get really hung up on the right microphone or the software or the settings. So clearly that's not the issue here. It's the confidence and maybe a little bit of the content. So another thing that I'll see often is when people are like what am I supposed to say in this very first episode? Do I introduce myself? Do I tell my life story? Do I go into all the details of why this message and this podcast matters to me? And you may not like this answer, but it depends. Everybody's different. Like I don't teach cookie cutter content strategies, I don't think that every single content creator should be doing the exact same thing. I think that we all have our own unique skill sets, our own abilities, but also our audiences are so different too, plus your industry. There's so many factors to consider. So I don't agree in a cookie-cutter approach that everyone should do everything the same way, but I will say that tech is clearly not an obstacle here. So let's dive into what is.
Speaker 1:So this notion of freezing up, even though you've told yourself you're an incredible speaker and you can even speak in front of dozens or hundreds or even thousands of people on stage. But yet when you get behind a microphone, and it's just you, right, you're in your office, you're in your closet, wherever you're recording, or maybe you're sitting at your desk and you're recording a YouTube video, and it's just you. So many of us feel stupid, so many of us feel awkward, so many of us start questioning am I right for this? Am I doing the right thing? It's not you. This happens to everyone. So I hope someone's taking that with you know some depth right there, because it does. It happens to everyone. You just have to decide how are you going to push past that and get to the other side of uncomfortable, impressive creators behind the scenes, from people that run huge businesses to people that have been speaking on stage forever. And it's a universal feeling to feel really awkward when it's just you right, because you don't have the energy of an audience or someone else being physically in the room with you. That just gets so uncomfortable.
Speaker 1:So here's what I always tell people Don't feel like you can't record something, then delete it, and then record something else and then delete that and then keep doing that process until you feel really comfortable with that final result. And a lot of you won't like this next thing, this next piece of advice I'm going to share, but don't overthink it. I know like it's so easy for us to be in our own way and good is the enemy of great but at the end of the day, like, just record something and delete it if you hate it. And then if it finally gets to a point where you're like, okay, like this is, this is fine, I can, I can go forth with this Then that's the version you go forth with. And then I encourage you to remember you're in this for the long game. You're not in this to just put out like the best one podcast episode ever or the best YouTube video ever. Right, at least I hope you're not. I hope you are thinking about doing this because you want to improve and you want to show up and say, yeah, I can do this and I can get better at it, which is probably the bravest thing that any content creator can do is just committing to the process, committing to showing up and to keep showing up, and that's the part of the journey. That's what I love about this right.
Speaker 1:We created the Consistent Creators Club all because we wanted a space for you to share that longevity and know that. It's about being in it for the long game. It's about creating a consistent rhythm to what you're going to do. Again, it's not about creating that one perfect piece of content. It's about creating something, hitting publish and moving on to the next piece of content so that you can show up and serve your audience in the best way possible. But that's enough for me. I want to hear from you.
Speaker 1:So if you've published a piece of content like what was that biggest struggle or that biggest hurdle you had overcome, I would love to get some comments going to encourage other people that again, this happens for everybody and you can push past it. You can hit publish on that very first episode and then hit publish on that second one and that third one, and that 20th one, and then that 200th one, and you will find that everyone has a struggle. Everyone has a version of that first episode that they're proud of, but they're also like oh, I did this, but also don't go listen to it. And this happens to so many people. But if you're wondering how to start a podcast, or if you're looking for a community of people to help you stay accountable on this journey, come join us in the consistentistent Creators Club or check out Profit Podcasting, our podcast course.
Speaker 1:Again, that teaches you how to start, launch and market your podcast. It has a lot of mindset and editing tricks and planning, and I share all the behind the scenes of our signature method, the Pratham process. That is really helpful for anyone, no matter the type of content that you're creating. So, whether you're a podcaster, youtuber, you're just posting on social media, you're creating a newsletter, you will find so many helpful things in our different programs. So let me know what other types of content videos you want to see.
Speaker 1:We're looking at creating some new series pretty soon and I want to know what you want to see. What do you want to see more of? Do you want to see more behind the scenes of our business, of our content strategies, of how we're thinking about monetization, what we're doing to create sustainable systems? Let us know. We'd love to hear from you. You can actually, if you're listening to the sustainable systems, let us know, we'd love to hear from you.
